Patient journey
The process is slightly different depending on whether you are having an ultrasound or a DEXA/BMD scan, but the overall pathway is the same.
Southern Ultrasound accepts referrals from general practitioners, midwives, physiotherapists and specialists. Contact the clinic with your referral details so the team can confirm the appointment, preparation and likely charges.
The clinic will let you know any preparation required. Ultrasound may involve gel and a handheld transducer; DEXA involves lying on a wide, flat bed while a camera arm passes over to take images.
The images are reviewed and reported by a radiologist. The report is sent to your referrer, who will discuss the result with you and advise any next steps.
