Body composition scanning (DEXA)
A DEXA body composition scan gives a detailed picture of what your body is made of: fat mass, lean mass and bone. Unlike BMI or scales alone, DEXA shows where fat and lean tissue are distributed across different body regions.
The scan is quick, non-invasive and usually takes around 10 minutes.
What does the scan measure?
- Total body fat percentage.
- Fat mass compared with lean muscle mass.
- Visceral fat, which is fat stored around the internal organs.
- Regional breakdown for arms, legs, trunk and android/gynoid areas.
- Bone mineral density and bone mineral content.
- Left/right muscle symmetry and regional balance.
Who is it for?
- Athletes and gym-goers tracking training progress.
- People on a weight loss programme who want to track fat loss and muscle retention.
- People working with a personal trainer, dietitian or sports scientist.
- Anyone curious about body composition beyond what scales or BMI show.
- People preparing for or recovering from surgery who want baseline data.
- Older adults monitoring age-related muscle loss.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required for a DEXA body composition scan. This is a self-funded service.
Pricing
Body composition scan: $220
Bone density + body composition combo: $350
Optional package idea: consider asking our team about a 3-scan tracking package if you want to compare results over time.
How to prepare
For the most consistent results, especially if you are tracking progress over time:
- Try to scan at the same time of day for repeat scans. Morning is ideal.
- Avoid heavy exercise in the 12 hours before your scan.
- Stay well hydrated, but avoid excessive fluid intake immediately before your appointment.
- If possible, fast for 3–4 hours before the scan, or keep your pre-scan meal consistent for repeat scans.
- Wear comfortable, light clothing without metal.
- Empty your bladder before the scan.
What does the report show?
Your report includes body composition results, regional breakdowns and reference comparisons for your age and sex. It can also include a summary image showing fat distribution.
Track your progress
DEXA body composition is most useful when repeated over time. If you are actively changing training or nutrition, repeat scans every 3–6 months can help show whether changes are coming from fat, lean mass or both.
