Bone Density Scanning (DEXA)

Bone density scanning (DEXA)

A DEXA bone density scan is a quick, painless way to measure bone mineral density. It helps show whether your bones are healthy, whether bone density is reduced, or whether you may be at increased risk of osteoporosis or fractures.

The scan uses a very low dose of X-ray radiation and usually takes around 10–20 minutes. You do not go inside a tunnel and no injection is required.

Who may benefit from a bone density scan?

  • Women aged 50+ or who are post-menopausal.
  • Men aged 60+.
  • People with a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture.
  • Anyone who has had a fracture after a minor fall or injury.
  • People taking long-term steroid medication, such as prednisone.
  • People with conditions that can affect bone health, including rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac disease or hyperthyroidism.
  • People with low body weight or a history of eating disorders.
  • Anyone with early menopause or ovarian removal.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required to book a DEXA bone density scan directly. If your GP or specialist has requested the scan, please bring or upload your referral so the report can be sent back to them securely.

How to prepare

  • Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan.
  • Avoid having a barium study or nuclear medicine scan in the 7 days before your appointment.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing without metal zips, buttons or underwire.
  • Tell us if you have had hip or spinal surgery, or if you have metal implants.
  • Let us know before the scan if there is any possibility you may be pregnant.

What happens during the scan?

You lie flat on a padded table while the scanner arm passes over your body. The most common areas scanned are the lower spine and hip. The scan is quiet, non-invasive and you can return to normal activities afterwards unless your clinician has advised otherwise.

Can I bring someone?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment.
